FirstWorks, a non-profit mission, enrolls at-risk inner city children and youth from downtown ZIP codes. This academic, faith-based program, under the direction of Rev. Birgitte T. French, Executive Director, meets twice a week for dinner, tutoring, homework assistance, career advice, crafts and to meet inspirational speakers. Two Saturdays a month the FirstWorks bus takes the group to fun, educational and sports outings.
After a delicious dinner served by volunteer Kitchen Angels, followed by homework assignments, the youth enrolled in the FirstWorks After School Program excitedly spread out on the floor of the dining hall for a fun and practical crafts lesson.

Using only scissors, no sewing machine, and no glue, the youth tried their hand at making blankets after watching their teachers first create one. Weaving together the cut ends and securing them with a knot, the youth make a striking two-tone reversible blanket in a matter of minutes.
For an added flair, they fringed the edges with special cuts.
